Service
Background
Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Service (BMS) is a
section under the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), Ministry of
Communications.
Brunei Meteorological Service is a member of the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO).
BMS begin his operation in 1996 at the Old Airport
site. A Meteorological Station was set up and observation
were made to provide the required meteorological data for the aviation
purpose. From there on, various meteorological element
were recorded to form climatological data.
Responsibilities
The overall objective of the Meteorological Service is to meet the needs of
all Bruneians for all meteorological information,
understanding and services that are essential for their safety, security and
general well-being and to ensure that meteorological data and knowledge are
effectively applied to Brunei Darussalam's national and international goals.
The successful running of the Meteorological Service is quintessentially
dependent on the existence of a well coordinated national meteorological data
collection and processing infrastructure to provide the common information
base on which all basic and specialised
meteorological services depend. This basic data collection system is also
needed to support day-to-day weather services especially to aviation and
generally to the community at large. Provision extends to the continuous
accurate long-term national climate record that will be needed by future
generations for research, planning and design and monitoring of climate
variability.
The meteorological observation network comprises of the three stations at
Brunei International Airport (BIA), Muara and Kuala
Belait. 24-hour surface observation is practised at BIA and Kuala Belait
and upper air observation is only done at BIA. Auxiliary MS rainfall stations
also exist at Tanah Jambu
and Sungai Gana.
Part of the operation of the meteorological/climate data collection are
carried out through a collective effort in which together with several
government agencies including the University of Brunei Darussalam has formed
a coordinated rainfall data collection committee.
Much of the services provided by Meteorological Service are made readily
available to the general public. Climate data requests are provided however
to non-govern mental agencies, with some exception, on cost recovery basis.
Organisational Structure
The Meteorological Service comprises Chief Meteorological Officer as head of
the section, nine Meteorological Officers, one Meteorological Coordinater and Technical Officer, three Supervisors, seven Senior Meteorological Observers Grade 1, five Senior
Meteorological Observers Grade 2, eighteen Meteorological Observers Grade 1,
twenty Meteorological Observers Grade 2 and a Clerk.
