 Foreword

The 1997/98 recession, which checked the region’s growth in air traffic movements is behind us now but unlike the rest of the Asia-Pacific region, the return to the pre recession rigor of air transportation activities is rather slow in this country. The rest of the region is now back to the top position in the world in terms of growth. Countries in this region responded to this growth by making big infrastructure investments in complete new airports, large airport expansions and new terminal buildings. Our policy in the past in infrastructure development has been that of phased development in response to the very immediate needs which, when compared to the region is rather less forward. This policy certainly needs to be reviewed because the focus of world for development in air transportation will be this region, and air transport development in this region is forecasted to be very healthy in the near future and well into the second decade of this century. There needs a lot to be done in airport and air transport planning. The future of air transport sector in this region looks promising.

Around the world airports are facing new challenges. Capacity building though timely addressed in parts of the Asia Pacific region despite the recession, may still face limitations in other parts of the region. With careful planning this limitation may turn into opportunity for some countries. Other challenges would be large capacity aircraft, noise pollution, information technology etc. They need to be handled now if they were not to pose problems later. In day-to-day running of the airport, there are many issues we are addressing. Among the key factors in addressing the issues is coordination. This is an area where we have not achieved very well and more efforts are obviously required in line with new participatory trends of public, private and government processes.

Throughout our history, we have over the years been putting safety as a top priority item and would maintain our accident-free record all the time, Insya Allah. Our policy in aviation safety standards is to be at par with those of the European and American. This has the effect of boosting public confidence bringing in successes and international awards for the operators concerned. We would strive to enhance safety by introducing new initiatives and with these new initiatives we hope to further enhance public confidence and help to create better business environment.

Wassalaam.
